Tele® & Esquire® Bridge Pickups

Fat Lion - Tele®/Esquire® bridge pickup. 42AWG over A5 rod magnets for a very bold tone with lots of mid-range, for serious rock and blues, approximately 9.2k dcr. Butter smooth treble that's never shrill, major midrange and good bass end, not best for maximum twang but some can surely be coaxed out. This is typically used for rock and bluez and pop, and Esquires® that need an increased range of tone. Black, ivory/parchment or dark maroon/red string wrapped, supplied with mounting screws and tubing.

Nashville Lion - Tele®/Esquire® bridge pickup. 42AWG over A5 rod magnets, lots of country twang with a hefty dose of mid-range, think "Broadcaster plus", this is the original Cavalier Lion that's quite at home for country, rock, pop and bluez - a classic overwound 50's Tele® bridge pickup, about 8.2k dcr. Smooth treble that's hardly shrill, good midrange and some bass end, good fat twang, arguably the most sought after Tele® bridge pup for country and lots of other genres. Black, ivory/parchment or dark maroon/red string wrapped, supplied with mounting screws and tubing.

Bakersfield Lion - Tele®/Esquire® bridge pickup. 42AWG over A5 rod magnets, plenty o' twang, some mid-range and lotsa treble on tap, yer typical vintage 50's Tele® pup, about 6.8k dcr. LOTS of treble tone, some midrange pops out, some bass is recognized, serious twang on tap. This is pretty much a classic Tele® bridge pup where the tone pot can be used to rein in the treble on occasion. Black, ivory/parchment or dark maroon/red string wrapped, supplied with mounting screws and tubing.

Nocaster Lion - Tele®/Esquire® bridge pickup. 43AWG over A3 rod magnets, approximately 10k dcr - that original classic earliest vintage 50's Fender® Tele® tone is back and fattened up with a higher turn count to squelch the shrill treble. Twangy, thick, clean, clear, with no ice-pick-in-the-ear. Black, ivory/parchment or dark maroon/red string wrapped, supplied with mounting screws and tubing.

Twin Lion - Tele®/Esquire® bridge pickup. A single tapped Lion that delivers two voices. Using a push/pull tone pot (with dpdt switch), or a separate spdt or dpdt switch, in your Tele® or Esquire® allows the Twin Lion voice selection, or a 4-way or even 5-way switch can utilized for different pickup voice selections. The Bakersfield-Fat Lion Twin Lion is a particularly versatile bridge pickup in that it allows both very twangy and very mid-range voices to be selected as needed. The '52 Twin Lion offers an Extreme range of both tone and output - old school and modern, all in one pickup! Other Twin Lion variations will have more subtle changes in tone that will be best heard at gigging and recording volumes. Custom dark maroon/red, black, or ivory/parchment string wrapped, iron baseplate and supplied with mounting screws and tubing.

The Hydra Lion - Tele®/Esquire® bridge pickup. A double tapped Lion that delivers all three Cavalier Lion voices - Bakersfield, Nashville and Fat Lion. Custom dark maroon/red, black, or ivory/parchment string wrapped, iron baseplate and supplied with mounting screws and tubing.

The Lion Family Pride

All Lions have defaults - AlNiCo mags, wind direction, top polarity, string wrap, baseplate, wax potting - where all can be optioned out to something different.

All Lion pickups come with a separate bridge string ground wire that allows the coil wires to be reversed, and are all Tele 4-way switch ready to hook up.

Lion Tele/Esquire® bridge pickups have a default North top polarity - the South needle of a magnetic compass will point to the top of any Lion pickup. Reverse polarity (South top) is an option at no charge. AlNiCo rod magnets are either flush or slightly above the top, never staggered. All coils are vacuum wax potted by default to greatly minimize micro-phonics, and have steel baseplates. Light wax potting for increased harmonics (and micro-phonics!) is an option. Bobbins are wrapped in black string as standard - ivory/parchment or dark maroon/red string is an optional choice. Leads are black, yellow or ivory cloth covered "push up" stranded wire. 6-32 mounting screws and neoprene height rubber tubing included.

The '52 Twin Lion is tapped for both 6.1k and 9.7k outputs - Heaven & Hell for both tone and output.

Bakersfield, Nashville, Nocaster and Fat Lion pickups are $60 each, the Twin Lion is $80, the Hydra Lion is $120. Shipping for each entire USA order is $5.25 USPS Priority. USPS International 1st Class is $8.50 for Canada and $14 for the rest of planet earth.

Tele® Neck Pickups

The Lioness - The original Tele® neck pickup was metal covered to attenuate the high end, reduce treble, and offer a more mid-range or baritone sound for rhythm playing and to offer an alternative to lugging around an upright string double bass. Within short order, Fender® invented the Precision Bass, yet still built the Tele® neck pickup with a tone blanketing metal cover. The Lioness frees up that great, natural single coil tone that's long been hidden under cold metal. Black tape coil covering, supplied with body or pickguard mounting screws and tubing.

The Lion King - A covered version of the Lioness, the Lion King offers unfettered vintage tone for those wishing the aesthetic look of the Tele® covered neck pickup. Thin nickel-silver covers in mirror chrome, satin nickel, mirror gold ... or "vintage correct" drawn brass covers with mirror chrome finish. All covers are independently grounded from the coil leads, allowing phase reversal and easy hook up with a 4-way pickup switch. Supplied with body or pickguard mounting screws and height tubing.

All Lion King pickups come with a separate cover ground wire that allows the coil wires to be reversed, and are all Tele 4-way switch ready to hook up.

All Lioness and Lion King Tele® neck pickups have a default South top polarity - the North needle of a magnetic compass will point to the top of any Lioness or Lion King pickup. Reverse polarity (North top) is an option at no charge. AlNiCo rod magnets are either flush or slightly above the top, never staggered. All coils are vacuum wax potted by default to greatly minimize microphonics. Light wax potting for increased harmonics (and microphonics!) is an option. Lioness pickups are black matte tape wound, Lion King pickups are covered. Leads are black, yellow or ivory cloth covered "push up" stranded wire. Body mount wood screws or 6-32 pickguard machine screws and height rubber tubing included.

Lioness - 43AWG coil wire over AlNiCo 5 magnets, approximately 7.8k resistance.

Cavalier Tiger - Strat® pickup, calibrated by positions. Based on 1950's to early 1960's Fender® Strat® designs, the Tiger Strat® pickup set offers classic vintage Strat® calibrated tone and volume for all three Strat® positions. SRV Tiger Trio - 42AWG coil wire over AlNiCo 5 magnets, approximately 6.8k, 6.2k, 6.0k resistance.

Bengal Tiger SRV Strat® bridge pickup - want more Strat® bridge output and increased midrange? This Strat® bridge pickup uses taller .781" AlNiCo V rod magnets which allows lots more coil wire turn count, and that turns the bridge position into a smokin' afterburner of fat tone and output! This pickup is an option only for the SRV Tiger Set, or available as a single purchase (see further below). 42AWG coil wire over AlNiCo 5 magnets, approximately 7.5k resistance.

All Tiger Strat® bridge and neck pickups have a default North top polarity - the South needle of a magnetic compass will point to the top of these Tiger Strat® pickups. The Tiger Strat® middle pickup has a default South top polarity - the North needle of a magnetic compass will point to the top of this Tiger Strat® pickup - this allows for a parallel humbucking mode in the 2 and 4 Strat® pickup select positions. Polarity changes on any Tiger Strat® pickup is an option at no charge. AlNiCo rod magnets are never staggered. All coils are vacuum wax potted by default to greatly minimize mircrophonics. Cavalier Pickups Build - Cavalier Tele®, Esquire®, Strat®, J-Bass®, '51 P-Bass® and '57 P-Bass® pickups are all built to respective vintage footprint specifications and all will properly fit into Fender® guitars and basses, or any guitars/basses built to Fender® pickup footprint specifications. I hand build all Cavalier pickups with vulcanized fiber board flatware, AlNiCo V or III or II magnets, hand guided 42AWG or 43AWG coil wire using a custom coil winding machine of my own build, with Red Lion infrared trigger and digital counter. The Lion bridge pickup has a steel base plate and its wire coil is wound with cotton string. The Lioness Tele® neck pickup wire coil is covered with black matte tape. The Lion King Tele® neck pickup has a choice of metal covers. The '51 P-Bass is cotton string wound. Tigers, '57 P-Bass and J-Bass use standard plastic covers as a default, or are black matte tape covered. All Cavaliers have cloth covered lead wire, and are vacuum wax potted (default). Light wax potting for increased harmonics (and microphonics!) is an option. After the bobbin has been assembled, the pressed-in magnets are further bonded with wicked-in thin CYAnoacrylate super glue for added bobbin strength.

Pickup Polarity and Wind Direction - Unless customer specified, the Lion is wound clockwise and is top North poled (a magnetic compass South needle will point to the pickup's top), the Lioness and Lion King Tele® neck pickups are wound counter-clockwise and are top South poled, and Tiger sets are wound with the middle pickup as reverse wound, reverse polarity (RWRP). Individual bass pickups are wound clockwise and are North polarized. The J-Bass bridge/neck set is RWRP, for parallel humbucking mode when both are selected. Use a simple magnetic compass to check single coil pickup polarity ...

As with most vintage style single coil pickups, the pickup height distance between the top of the pickup and the guitar strings is critical to tone - closer to the string for more volume and punch, further away for less volume and more acoustic sweetness.

Special Lion Info - There is no ground lead base plate strap with Lion pickups. Included with each Lion is a wired ground washer that slips over any one of the Lion's mounting screws and is soldered to the back of any pot. After putting a Lion mounting screw in the Tele/Esquire® bridge, slip on the wired washer over the screw, then slip on the rubber height adjustment. Without pickup ground strapping, the leads can be swapped within the control cavity to fix any possible phasing issue. ....

Lion Tele/Esquire® bridge pickups have unusually high coil wire turn counts, therefore their tall bobbins are packed full. Take care installing a Lion into its bridge mount, insuring the string wrap and wire beneath it aren't crushed.

WARRANTY - Cavalier Pickups warrants that its products are free from defects in materials and workmanship for LIFE (the original owner's or Cavalier Pickups), and will repair or replace any part which (under normal installation and use) discloses such defects, if the product is returned to Cavalier Pickups with prepaid shipping charges, and provided that the product, upon examination by Cavalier Pickups, discloses that it is defective. This warranty does not extend beyond the original purchaser, nor to any Cavalier Pickups product which has been damaged by misuse, accident, incorrect wiring, improper installation, use in violation of the instructions, tampering, alteration or repair outside of our domain.

RETURNS - The Cavalier return policy is simple - there is NO return policy, unless there is a verified build defect (see Warranty). However, there is a 30 day swap allowed - return a pickup in both working and visual order, and no shortened leads, for another Cavalier pup of the same value. The fee for this service is $15 (which includes return shipping to you), and $10 for each additional return-for-swap pickup. DO NOT RETURN MERCHANDISE WITHOUT FIRST CONTACTING CAVALIER PICKUPS. Communications is everything.

SOUNDBYTES

Prelude - Mostly thanks to corporate guitar industry marketing hype, everyone wants to hear pickup soundbytes and be told specific pickup dcr (dc resistance of the coil). Both have their very limited meaningful place, once you realize their pitfalls. Dcr values only matter once you understand a pickup's build, and comparing unlike builds with regards to dcr is simply foolish. Likewise with soundbytes, you're hearing more than the pickup's voice at least third hand, in a very controlled environment that one can never fully replicate in the real world, and vice-versa. Please take these thoughts under advisement.

The Cavalier Fat Lion ...

An Esquire® loaded with a Cavalier Fat Lion pickup can offer a very diverse and pleasing tone and range of attack. The Lion is of vintage build, with vulcanized fiberboard, AlNiCo V rod magnets and 11900 turns of 42AWG coil wire, steel baseplate, the coil is string bound before vacuum wax potting and cloth leads installed. In the following YouTube sound byte (not a video) I'm fingerpicking the surf green Esquire® I assembled directly into a pc notebook via a Centrance interface and Audacity recording software, no fx. The first and last surf green Esquire® are the same (the first without the Bigsby Tremolo was used to record the sound byte), 250k volume pot set at 3/4 and the no-load tone pot is out of the signal path, fingers only, no pick. This was a first take and good enuf for me ...

Kyle and his Cavalier Nashville Lion bridge pickup and Cavalier SRV Strat® neck pickup. Run into an Eleven Rack. The first patch is Digidesigns own Vintage Overdrive amp model, the second is an AC-30, third is a clean Super Reverb, and fourth is a Tweed Deluxe, toward the end a Big Muff was added onto it ...

Nashville Lion bridge pickup again, through an Eleven Rack. The first patch is a Tweed Deluxe, second is AC30 with a Tubescreamer, and the clean is a Super Reverb. The neck pickup is a Novak PAF sized WideRange ...

Nashville Lion again, but this time with a Klein mini humbucker in the neck position ...

For the following Nashville Lion sound bytes, the test guitar used is an uber-light 5.2# Esquire® partscaster, solid paulownia body, TRO-W Fender® Japan neck, vintage Wilkinson brass compensated saddles, and 11-50 nickel wound GHS strings.

Two amps were used - a Li'L Dawg "Champster Special" 5F1 w/JJ 6V6, 12AX7 & NOS 5Y3, 12" Weber AlNiCo 12A125 speaker, and a stock Reissue Fender® Deluxe.

A tad of pedal compression was used for all tracks, guitar volume always left full up.

Amps were stereo digitally recorded directly to a Zoom H2, 44Hz/128bit wav files were generated and converted to mp3 files. Other than cutting and saving tracks, there was no sound editing of any kind.

Guitar pickin' courtesy of Sean Aumack of the The Detonators

Champster Special - 1.2M - The master no-load tone pot fully engaged which completely removes both the pot and .022uf tone cap out of the signal path for direct raw pickup tone.

Champster Special - 3.36K - The master no-load tone pot is rolled back back 1/3 to 1/2 turn, which kicks it in for a nice fat P90-like tone.

Champster Special - 332K - Listen for the tone pot to go from a 1/2 rolled off fat P90 tone to completely off for a biting, cutting treble tone without that nasty ice-pick-in-the-ear.

Blackface Deluxe - 1.2M - A bit of reverb and overdrive added for some classic overdriven Tele/Esquire® tones.

Nashville Lion test guitar is a "heavy" 6# Esquire® partscaster, solid paulownia body w/bound maple cap, TMO-FAT Fender® Japan neck, vintage Wilkinson brass compensated saddles, and 11-50 nickel wound GHS strings.

The amp used is a box stock VHT Special 6 combo with no mods, tone set to 1/2, vol set to 3/4, no boost - you can hear the amp breaking up as it gets pushed. All fingers, no pick. Sound 1 - pup w/no tone pot or cap in the circuit, sound 2 - pup w/.0047uf cap on the signal to ground, soundb 3 - pup w/250k tone pot and .022uf cap, tone pot fully dimed (mud!).

Amp was stereo digitally recorded directly to a Zoom H2, 44Hz/128bit wav file was generated and converted to mp3. Other than cutting and saving the one track, there was no sound editing of any kind.

VHT Special 6 - 1.1M - Three playing styles, three switch positions, three distinct tones.

Another Esquire, this one sports a Trem King. GFS Paulownia body, TRO-W Tele® neck, Fat Lion bridge mated to a special under pickguard dummy coil. The controls are my typical for an Esquire® - bridge pup only, pup + tone pot/.022uf cap, pup + .0047uf cap.

Centrance & PC - 1.9M - Fingerpickin' recorded directly to the pc with no modulation fx, tone pot rolled in slightly. Listen to the Lion's acoustic-like sparkle.

The Cavalier Lioness ...

The Cavalier Lioness Tele® neck pickup. Recorded to a pc notebook via a Centrance audio interface and Audacity recording software with no fx or modulation, volume pot up full and the no-load tone pot is out of the signal path. Soundbytes are fingerpicked and flatpicked. The Lioness is built vintage style with vulcanized flatware, AlNiCo V rod magnets and 9000 turns of 43AWG coil wire, vacuum wax potted, tape bound and cloth covered lead wires. No cover! Covering a Tele® neck pickup muffles the tone as a metal cover shield will shunt treble to ground.

Cavalier SRV Tiger Strat®
The mint green Esquire® had some surgery recently, and like the emerging beautiful butterfly has become a Tele® (not that the Esquire® wasn't a beauty, either!). A Cavalier SRV Tiger Strat® neck pup has been added, a 4-way pickup switch, and the rosewood TRO-W neck replaced with a solid maple TMO-C Fender® Japan neck. Does the fun ever stop? :)

The Cavalier Fat Lion & SRV Tiger ...

Champster Special - 360k - SRV Tiger neck pup into a bit of EH Memory Toy analog delay, into the Champster Special (as above) with amp volume at 3/4's and guitar volume full up, tone pot removed from the circuit, power section is way overloaded and pushed well into amp distortion. Recorded with a Zoom H2, fingers only (no pick) and no sound editing with Audacity.

Centrance & PC - 743k - Fingerstyle with the SRV Tiger neck pup, recorded directly to an old notebook via a Centrance AxePort Pro and mixed down with Audacity in Win7. No modulation added or removed, just direct guitar-to-pc in one take.

Centrance & PC - 1.1M - Tele® with Cavalier Lion bridge and SRV Tiger neck, recorded directly as noted above. No modulation added or removed, it is what it is. Tiger doing the rhythm, Lion on the lead. Fingers, no pick. Freebie drum track courtesy of the Web.
